Well, although my last 2 wedding band gigs were a pain, they did provide some decent pay. I only spend money on gear that I've earned playing, so I took that gig money and picked up a Eastman T184MX. It is a really great guitar. Plays and sounds really good. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix22...

Very cool. Could you share where you got it ? Thanks I have 2 Charangos. I bought the first one (on the left in the photo below) in Mendoza, Argentina in 2004 and my Peruvian son-in-law's mom brought the second one (on the right in the photo below) to me from Lima, Peru last year. https://bb.steelg...

Rack for 2 lap steels, 2 Charangos, and 1 Uke

I've found this 5 guitar rack works well for a couple Clinesmiths, my Charangos, and Uke.

There are still a few places in Nashville where you can find great country music. Becky Hinson and the Nashville Palace House Band are really good. I did 17 gigs at the Nashville Palace in Nov/Dec 2017 in their larger back room that holds a couple hundred folks. But I would always go the the smaller...

I've played my last wedding band gig

For many years I used to lead a 11 piece band that played wedding and corporate events. 3 singers, 2 guitars, bass, drums, keys, and 3 horns. I did all the charts and arrangements for the band, as well as scheduling, interfacing with the event/wedding planner, hiring the sound man, etc., etc., etc. ...

I've lived in Nashville since 1983. Lower Broadway now is like Hill Valley in Back To The Future II where Biff turned it into Hell-on-earth. I won't play gigs anymore on lower Broadway. The parking is too expensive, the load-in/load-out is a royal pain (and can be risky - several musicians have been...

Charango progress made on long international trip

Just got home from some traveling with the family. I didn't take a guitar because of the uncertainty of carrying it on the many flights we took, so instead I took a small South American 10 string Charango which was very easy to carry on. I'd never really delved into mapping the fretboard of a Charan...

Re: Steelin’ Scales and Modes introduction

so proud to have it published, only to have it pointed out after shipping about 100 copies that there were some major errors! I wrote a 386 page jazz theory book for guitar that was used at Berklee School of Music for awhile. I proof read it three times and was confident it was ready. Then I had my...

The guys at Carter's Vintage Guitars know their stuff pretty well. They have a lot of steels go thru their shop. They told me it was a home project and not a factory build. Here is the link on their site and you can see more photos, spec, and description which says the 2 outer necks work intermitten...

Nah, I just thought it was a pretty interesting steel. I had a T8 Stringmaster at one time, and I've found the D8 is all I need.

btw, it still looks to have the original switch for the neck selection... and wonder how the 3rd and 4th are hooked in, since it seems it is labeled for just the two...but wonder how it's really wired. The neck selector switch has 4 positions, but it was a bit tricky to get it to stay on positions ...

I guess if you had a band with 2 steel players, and one of them was left handed, you could string up the 2 outer necks for a lefty and they two players sit on each side of the steel with 2 necks each. :D

National Quad 8

I dropped by Certer's Vintage Guitars this morning and came across this National Quad 8. I'd never seen one before and asked if it came with a case. They told me it was homemade (some put together two D8's), and therefore no case. Looks like whoever did it did a good job. I didn't plug it in (notice...

Has anyone seen/played a lap steel w/ 3 single coil pickups?

My favorite electric guitar configuration is the Stratocaster with it's 3 single coil pickups and a 5 way selector switch. There is such great versatility in the tone that can be produced.

Has anyone come across a lap steel that has 3 single coils and a 5 way pickup selector?

My rig for gigs

I built this rig for my solo and band gigs. I play acoustic steel string and classical guitars thru the LR Baggs ParaAcoustic DI's and my L-5, Strat, Tele and lap steels thru the Fractal AXE FX III. The Strymon reverb is on the FX loop of the mixer so that I can use it with the DI's and the FX III. ...

Here is another recommendation for Doug Beaumier's instructional material. Doug's books/CDs are what got me going on C6 (although I've since moved on to Leavitt tuning).

If it is an old/vintage steel, be sure to somehow listen to the steel being played - even if it is just a FaceTime or Zoom call where the seller slowly picks each string so that you can hear if the pickup works good across all the strings.

Spanish guitar improvisation

Recorded this last night. My LOGIC PRO stopped sending any sound to my speakers after the first take and I couldn't figure out how to fix it, so it is what it is.
