Probably dumb question re: volume pedal w/lap steel

Been playing about 12 years (weissenborn)… and am considering a volume pedal. Tried a wah (I know… just love that sound) but when the knee starts moving and the guitar begins bobbing up and down, I get a bit discombobulated. Would I have to migrate to a stand for the Weiss? Wish there was some ‘side...

Where’s the quirky in lap steel?

I come from a singer-songwriter wannabe, late 70’s/early 80’s. Lived in a town with some innovative player/songwriters (Greg Brown being one). My approach to music in a general was not really based in any fixed idiom or genre, whatever. Not complicated, musically, but not dedicated to a fixed form (...

New/Used Weissenborn ‘review’ (teardrop!)

Have owned a number of Weissenborn-styled lap steel guitars… been curious about the ‘Teardrop’ shaped Weissenborn but never got a chance to play one. A used Lazy River teardrop showed up on the buy sell… so I took a flyer on it! Spruce top (with a bit of nice bear-claw), mahogany back/sides. Typical...

I have a Shubb GS (Gary Swallow) tone bar. Nice grip, good tone. I also have an EG Smith bar… super pointy like the GS, with a radical rounded saw tooth on the grip edge. Also have a Beard or something with different angles on each end. I Have a bunch of sharp edge bars that I’ve acquired over time…...

Saw Clive Carroll playing before John Renbourn a few years before he passed… amazing British finger style guitar show. Clive (and I guess Renbourn, too) super glue ping pong ball pieces top their fingernails. It worked. They sounded killer Here’s what I do now. I go to my wife’s nail salon and get a...

Since it seems apropos Rocky Mountain Slides https://rockymountainslides.com/ Have solved a similar problem. Slides are made of stone, highly polished, with some heft (less than steel bullets) way more easily gripped for me. I always used rail bars, wanted to get the hang of a bullet’s versatility… ...

Great little effect (which I stumbled upon as well). I think I accidentally ‘whomped’ on the nut of my Pogreba Weissenborn, producing a harmonic-like tone. I can also get sitar like sounds if I roll off the nut just a hair - especially nice if I want the open chord to ring/sustain a bit (that ‘space...

Oh yeah
The H-165 HAD A BASEBALL BAT like neck, high action, but with a soundhole humbucker it was a delta blues machine.

The tone boss has the pretty changeable faceplates but runs about 30 bucks more

Comparison: Amumu vs Seymour Duncan mag-mic in weissenborns

Ok’ this is pretty casual as comparing tone is always subjective… Amumu (passive magnetic soundhole in standard scale Lazy River Weiss (mahogany) VS. SD Mag-Mic (active)in Pogreba bari Weiss (mahogany). I’m actually liking the Amumu a tad more -probably due to the passive element - I can dig into th...

Amumu SP60 passive soundhole PU review

Just a quick review for those acoustic lap steel players (I play a baritone and reg scale weissenborn-style). One of my two Seymour Duncan mag-mic pickups mounting tabs degraded and broke … so I went on the hunt for a new pickup. The Amumu SP60 was a new item I hadn’t heard of. My interest was pique...

Don’t know how this would transpose for left hand, but I stumbled across this alternative by Steve Dawson… and I love it! It’s probably the antithesis of C6 et al. But for me - not a real learned player in music theory - it allows tons of sonic experimentation and fun. https://youtu.be/g4A2hdD58Mo I...

Rocky Mountain slides… nails it again!

This has been covered before, but, like another great version of ‘Sleep Walk,’ always worth revisiting… Picked up another couple bars from Doc at Rocky Mountain Slides. By suggestion, I got Salida Luna and Cougar Crimson (made from a tiger eye stone). He include a Jurassic Dreams bar (looks to be so...

Give Lance at Lazy River guitars a call.

He often has a model off the bench with a flaw that he’s willing to sell for less.
More than a Gold tone, but WAY WAY WAY more tone and quality than a Gold Tone… will hold value. His sapelle guitars are reasonable and excellent
