I wonder how many more people have aquired Remington steel guitars since this last post. I must say that I still love mine. Not sure of the year but I think its about 1991 judging by the emblem being in the middle of the guitar. Cant find any labels inside. I was lucky to get this as I believe it's ...

Personally I prefer lap steel to pedal. I was listening to Tommy White playing "That Girl Who Waits On Tables" and thought I may as well have a go on lap steel. C6 Tuning.

"Sleigh Ride" - Xmas instrumental

Here's wishing you all seasons greetings and a good new year. Yes I know - a bit early but very busy getting xmas shows done for FRH Radio and of course my weekly swing show as the Voice of the UK.

I have spent lots of money over the years with guitar pickups, replacing them and then eventually putting the originals back. My advice is to stick with what you have. Every player has a different ear when it comes to pickups and at the end of the day it is what suits you and your style. Cindy plays...

I was very surprised watching a YouTube video of Tommy White at a country concert, and a member of the audience asked "What is that instrument there?" and pointing to the steel guitar. No doubt this person was a country fan but didn't know what made the noises. We have all gone through tha...

I have both high and low pedals and on the lap steel can use either. With the big one, if my knee is up against the guitar I just slide it forward. I also have a Sho-Bud 6139 pedal steel, and if using the Sho-Bud pedal my knee gets locked under the guitar body. Makes it awkward as both my E changes ...

The method I have used for years on all my guitars and steels is as follows. I pass the string through the tailpiece and pull tight. Then at the tuner end I bend the end of the string at 90 degrees at a point level with the next string post past the one you want to use. Therefore if the string I am ...

My main tuning for lap steel is C6 8 string although I do have an E13 to hand. My advice would be to pick a tuning and milk it for all it's worth. You will be surprised at what is there with slants and straight bar but you do have to go searching for it.

Thanks for the comments. Dave - Yes that is a Remington and very lucky to have it. As far as I know it is the only one in the UK. Slants took a bit of getting used to after the National as the scale length has jumped from 23" to 24" but it's getting there. As Lloyd Green once said - "...

For the past couple of years people have been asking for a live version of my adaptation of "Nightlife" for C6 lap steel so here it is.

Jerry - I don't know if you are aware but you can buy a small tape player very cheaply that will plug in to your computer and convert to MP3. Costs between 10-20 US dollars.

Jerry. I am really glad you told me the original title. I had been searching for the title on Toms version as he was shown as composer. I have a number of jazz books here and of course it did not show up. Now I have found it under the original title in my books and it is heaven. The bridge shows cho...

Jerry you are a hero. The bridge was the part I was after. I could just about hear changes in the background but all other instruments doing a run down over the top which to my ear was a bit confusing. The rest is no problem. Once again thanks. Now to programme the chords in band in a box and get to...

Ramblings on E13

A couple of nights ago I wrote a small piece showing two examples of Leon McAuliffes E13. However, - whilst the first piece of tab showed up OK, the second would not translate. I had better success on the British Steelies blog, so, if anyone is interested they can have a look here. https://www.thebr...

This is what happens when you have two guitars laying around. One set up in my den and the other in the kitchen/diner next to my computer. The Remington E13 has an E at the top which is usual but my National has G# as first string. Was working on the National and had to keep translating.
