Steve, you are welcome to borrow my copy of the Harvard Dictionary of Music wherein you will find a great article on the Pythagorean Comma. Or, you can also just use another age-old remedy: more vibrato!

My first steel (a dreaded red-stained Maverick) had that G#-B pull on the B pedal, along with G#-A on string 3. I learned the basics with that on there, until I eventually realized it was wrong & it took me forever to get used to pulling both G#'s to A. I tried valiantly to get the Mav to do it ...

This sounds like what Gibson did on the later Console Grande and Console 500. Edit - actually those were the other way around, the bass strings had a partial coil forwards the neck & the treble strings had one towards the bridge. . . Here is an example: https://reverb.com/item/26641743-rare-1959...

Sounds like a phaser pedal to me, reminds me of my orange Ross or the MXR phase-95 on similar settings. Tasty playing!

Very interesting, so the bass side magnet is bigger but the coil winding is the same (of course, although I suppose it could have fanned out wider) but slanted - which foreshadows the slanted placement of bridge pickups later on.

These are cool, I actually have two - a 50's and a 60's one. Going by the case this would be later 60's. Supposedly they outfitted these with leftover Broadcaster or Esquire pickups? Not sure if that's just a rumor or really means anything anyway. They can be pretty bright and twangy, but if you bac...

2 problems I have with them: 1. easy to knock things out of the strip when getting up & down from the seat 2. Pain in the butt to wind/unwind a long power chord under the chair every time. I don't know if anyone has done it with a removable IEC-type plug but that would solve that issue (although...

That decal & the fretboards clearly have been on there for a long time. It makes me think of the occasional old Gibson lap steel or guitar you see with a Fleur-de-Lis emblem instead of the flower pot or diamond, not sure what the deal is on those but maybe they were some kind of custom option do...

These were built from like 1948-1954 or so? Earliest ones had Charlie Christian style pickups, then "racetrack" with pole pieces, then P-90 types. Also they were actually mostly-hollow cabinets, not solid wood (other than maybe the very earliest, not sure about that.)

Actually the case doesn't look like it has leg holders (usually on the lid) so either this didn't ever have them or else this isn't the original case. Also, the body doesn't look like it has any binding and the corners are all rounded - I'm wondering if it is actually a knock-off. The only things th...

Gibson Console Grande, although with some modifications - the knobs, fret markers, that decal at the end, and the pickups & surrounds are different too. Looks refinished. Maybe it was a salvage job on one that was missing a bunch of parts. Not all of them had legs, and the original legs tend to ...

Ets

There is a video of Al Brisco playing one of these somewhere on the SGC site, the tone is incredible. I can't find it now, maybe it was on the old site which used to come up as well. As I recall ETS stood for "East Texas Steel" and was Bud Carter's last venture after the Carter brand. Alwa...

I mostly use B-Bb to get a 9th chord like P5 on C6 (all the way across the neck if you combine it with the typical RKL) or split with the A pedal for a minor/maj7 chord - or to walk the root down from minor through min/maj7, min7, to min6. For two-note voicings like Together Again I think the above-...

Fess

My D-10 Fessy has these, installed by someone else previously. They also added Zum-style raise helper springs (adjustable via beaded bread bag ties) and Shobud-style return springs on the cross shafts. It does play more in tune and more precisely than my loafer S-10. I wish that one had the rounded ...
