Honky Tonk Confidential, our little country band from Washington DC, had the privilege of playing on the Millenium Stage at the Kennedy Center this Sunday. I've got an old Starday Country Music album from the 60's which has a Ray Pillow song titled "Lonesome Vietnam." Interesting tune.

I recall a band called Killbilly about 10-12 years ago that sounded like a heavy metal band with a banjo grafted on. To me, anyway.

Anybody know of those guys?

Not once on this thread has anyone yet mentioned the mighty Red Simpson. Hope this rectifies the problem.

I think one could argue that "the rock guitars and loud drums of the New Country" are themselves retro. I mean, come on - are there ANY hard rock or metal bands out there who have done anything REALLY new since the 1980's? A lot of them are just recycling the same progressions, same tempos...

When I was playing in a more modern country band I used to get a tape like this about every two weeks from our bandleader. I'd listen to it on the way to work and back; sure made the commute a whole lot easier. Only thing is: in a traffic jam, no one thinks you sound as good singing harmony as you do.

All I know about him is that Eddie Stubbs plays a lot of his stuff on his WAMU-FM show here in DC. That and the fact that his song "Lonely Nights and Blues are Settin' In"
has one of my favorite steel turnarounds of all time on it.
