Hey Rich… I played on that track using a Universal tuning. The “seamlessly it sounds like C6“ is the magic of that tuning. Everyone posting is exactly correct that the E to Eb lever is the key to switching between the tunings, even on E9. For Heather, aiming at a quasi-Bakersfield E9 sound was the k...

Yeah, Craig…it’s a shame Chris’ show isn’t more available. It’s always fun to watch him and his guests. Great host.

When I was in my early teens, I’d watch the Glen Campbell Goodtime Hour and loved it. That was never lost on me when I’d play with him.

Thanks for the link, Roger. Great performance! Glen was certainly special. Unbelievable talent on so many levels. Here’s a link to when we played on The Chris Isaak Show. Starts with Wichita Lineman. https://youtu.be/mhtExv5v_Fg

Played on quite a few Christmas records (Dwight Yoakam, LeAnn Rhimes, etc.) but one that really stands out is Blue Christmas on a Sesame Street record featuring the blue characters...Cookie Monster, Grover & Herry Monster. I like that it gave me street-cred with my kids when they were really you...

Interesting that they did an “inside” scene on location instead of a set at the studio. Good call on figuring out where they shot it, Jack. It most likely wouldn’t have had the same showcase with those instruments if it was on a soundstage. Glad they took a field trip!

I was wondering about that one, Noah. Cool that you have one.

Yeah, it was a great time for dobros, Jim. Seeing them in a store like that shows how popular they were.

I love seeing how new and shiny the instruments are! Not used to seeing '30s dobros look like that.

Department store dobros (1933 film)

The other night I was watching a 1933 film called Employees Entrance. The character was in the music section of a department store. Did a double-take when I saw the glass showcase packed with dobros. Had to take a screenshot and share it. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix2020-03/1491_1933_Dobr...

While we were working on the last couple of Glen Campbell records, even though his battle with Alzheimer’s was getting worse, he always got excited when he’d see the steel and ask me if I knew who Curly Chalker was. He would light up every time he said Curly's name.

I played on a couple of Glen's recent records (Meet Glen Campbell & Ghost On The Canvas) and played some live dates, including tv with him. Glen always seemed excited to have steel in the band. He often mentioned Curly Chalker to me...he was a real fan of Curly's.

The only time reverb sounds funny to me is when there's no reverb anywhere on the song. I once mentioned to Tom Petty about adding reverb to my steel (just for monitoring). His smiling response..."Reverb? We don't use reverb". He graciously had the engineer hook up a reverb. Once I played ...

Hey John...when we did the Capitol Records sessions, you probably remember that there were a few minor walkdown lines that appeared in some of the pieces (sometimes referred to as "line cliche"...minor, min(maj7), min7, min6). On a few of them, I used the B to Bb lever when I wanted a fat ...

Thanks guys. If I pull the chassis, and put in the baffle, there still won't be clearance between the speaker edge and the doghouse (new term for me...thanks, Lane) once I put the chassis back in. It's a Telonics speaker and the edge doesn't seem extraordinarily thick. I'll call Mojotone (it wasn't ...

Another Twin Reverb 15" baffle question...

I have a '65 Reissue Twin Reverb. Mojotone just made an offset baffle for me and it doesn't work. On the reissue, there's a small metal housing on the right side (looking in from the back of the amp) that doesn't have enough room for the rim of the speaker to fit between the baffle and the housing. ...

At the Barn Dance in L.A., JayDee would sometimes sit in with us on pedal steel. Since I played standing up (double 8 Stringmaster) I had a bird's eye view of his hands. When he'd go up the neck, I'd play low and vise versa. The combination of pedal and non-pedal was a really cool combination.

The last day of recording we cranked up the overdrive pedals, dug in and shook the rafters of the sound stage. The coolest part of that may be that it's the first time JayDee was recorded playing through a distortion pedal!

The whole experience was like summer camp with great friends.

BL 705. Thought briefly about changing it (like we all do with pickups!) but it sounds really great for recording, so I'm gonna leave it. It's easy to have the steel sit well in a dense mix.
