As an absolute pedal steel noob, I can tell you that the best advice I ever got was "buy once, cry once." Continual fussing with the internals of an instrument you don't know how to play is a recipe for quitting. So plan to spend $1500 - $2000 for something good. If you end up not pursuing...

Thanks, Ian. It's a Texas Pedal Steel, all-pull. Newish guitar that I bought used a few months ago, and had set up by the builder. I haven't really used the RKL lever while I've been learning the basics, and just noticed the issue while I had it plugged into my tuner. The B-pedal raise on 6 works fi...

Thanks everyone. I don't have split tuning. I haven't changed string gauge. Both the raise and lower nylon hex nuts have some slack between them and the finger. The raise works fine, and is in tune. I do have a helper spring on the raise. I may look into adjusting it or trying a lighter gauge string...

Tuning the RKL 6th String Lower

Beginner here, with what I hope is a simple question: I have a 10-string 3 & 5 E9 Emmons set-up, with the RKL lowering 6 to F# and raising 1 to G#. The RKL raises the 1st string perfectly, but on string 6, the lowered F# is very sharp. Turning the hex tuner doesn't seem to have much of an effect...

I bought my Indy 8 in 2004, and have never wanted another; the tone and sustain are awesome. I've got it in A6 these days, and I smile every time I play it!

I tried a drum throne, but I recently bought this Proline memory foam bench for $80 at Guitar Center, and I like it better. One of the height settings is 21" on the nose, and I like that it doesn't swivel or tip over. https://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix2020-03/14532_Screen_Shot_20220227_at_...

Fellow newbie here. If you can, record your own backing tracks on GarageBand or other software (or just use a looping pedal), so you can control the difficulty and the tempo to match your abilities. I recorded a simple rhythm guitar part consisting of G, A, D, and Bm that I can loop endlessly while ...

I had a Stage One, and it was a great introduction to the PSG. But I'd definitely buy from a forum member, rather than Reverb. I've bought two guitars here, and both transactions were flawlessly completed by super helpful, caring players. Just be ready to jump quickly; inexpensive models go FAST, so...

I'm a home recording guy myself, and you've put together a nice mix on that one. Maybe bring up the steel a little, especially for the solo -- don't hide all that good playing!

Probably no help, but a steel website in the Netherlands shows one:

Hi Gary,

I'm not ready to pull the trigger yet, but was wondering about the time frame on the Discovery guitars. Are there still some available for April shipping, or is it more of a wait-list situation?

Thank you!

This is a steal! The Stage One is not just a good guitar for the money, it's a darn fine guitar at any price.

I have no affiliation with this sale, guitar, or brand, but if you're thinking about taking up PSG, this is your Willie Wonka Golden Ticket!

One more vote for the Stage One. I've only been playing for a little more than a year, and I have to say that the way this guitar operates and stays in tune has made the learning curve a whole lot easier. As someone already noted, this is not a "beginner" or "starter" model, even...

I prefer the pinpoint applicator version. The steel syringe really allows you to apply it with great precision.

I'm in my first year of playing PSG, and I got a Stage One. IMO, you won't find a better steel for the price. It's hardly "entry level," as it has a full array of features, stays in tune for weeks, works flawlessly, and sounds magnificent. It's the only guitar I'll need for many years. I'm...
