Palm Blocking Help

I have been playing for 3 years (non Pedal) and finally took lessons. Well respected local player/coach says to put crease of my right hand, the crease below the pinky, in line with the highest string you are picking ( lets say the high E in ACEGACEG) and to round your hand like a golf ball is in th...

Magnatone Lyric

James, I did the same thing with the legs - Took from a Rogue 6-string. The legs work ok. Had to route out the base to insert the cups but worked. Question: How did you create the vinyl stencil for the Magnatone etching? Is it a sticky-backed thing? I am looking at restoring a Magnatone too. Keep th...

I have always been a multi-instrumentalist and used to play stuff in open D (Vestapol) tuning and stuff. On the Guitar. Fast forward to a few years ago I was making a CD of original songs (bluegrass/country) and called a friend to play pedal steel and dobro. Well we started in on a Texas Swing thing...

Well I can see both sides of it. It looks like someone has had dealings with him and he may have parted out a working guitar. That I do not condone. Flip side, if the seller has a non-working instrument that has been used to obtain parts for retrofit of another guitar, then it's ok obviously to make...

eBay guy parting out complete lap steels

This guy has 702 parts on eBay and appears to be parting out and selling lap steel parts separately. michael_atw. 702 parts listed. Stringmaster triple T8body, stringmaster single body, the cases for the same, the parts for the same. Wonder if anyone else is as offended and disgusted as I am?

Thanks all. It turns out that an earlier repair job had switched the leads on one of the Pickups. That neck was the one that was not sounding right. My repair guy switched the neck PUP leads so that both PUPs were oriented correctly and it sounds great. Another pointer regarding the Magnatone twin -...

Magnatone Lyric D8 Pickup Help

I need help on Magnatone Lyric Pickups. I just acquired a dual neck 8 string Lyric (D8/G-85-DW) circa ~1956 Magnatone Lyric steel. The pickups on the outer neck are not as loud as the inner neck. The inner neck sounds great, balsy. The outer neck sounds thin. Temporarily I am setting the louder neck...

I just bought a Magnatone Lyric D8. That fretboard is a Magnatone, the etched and black aluminum fret markings are same as my Magnatone.
The Pickup is not magnatone.

Thanks Mike, great topic. I recorded myself the other night after figuring out 'Together Again' on the lap. It sounded great in my head. When I played it back it didn't flow. I thought it did but it didn't. Revieiwing the reocrding helped me hear it and identify what ot work on. Especially true in m...

Yep, seems it worked on paper but you bust strings trying to get there. Too long a string length (24"). Thanks Jerome... And in my earlier reply I meant 'Jack' not Alan. so I may need to go to a lower home key to complete the triad on top as suggested. I heard the strain over the phone of my ne...

Thanks, Alan. I know in 8-sting C6 i have G on top; ACEGACEG and in E6 lo-to-hi; B C# E G# B C# E G#. Now imagine if I have a 9-string, and have the same low-to-High B C# E G# B C# E G#, but with B on top. Crank a .009 up to the B. Where safety goggles first? Add a capo-like nut extender or post to ...

High B string in E6 tuning - Anyone try it?

I have a desire to put a high B above the G# on the top string of an 8-string lap in E6 (E13) tuning. It will tend to break. Has anyone tried successfully to add a B on top and achieve a triad of E-G#-B on the top 3 strings? .009 or .008" gauge? Impossible?.

mando down under

Hi Sandy, I'd suggest getting a good mando, it makes so much difference. I got a high end one and I noticed how i used to play so hard and loud and I developed bad habits. Hard to break them, and it is difficult to now play with the finesse that a good instrument demands. Webers are very good. Old '...
