Before I put the finish on the lap steel. After removing all of the hardware, how do I keep the holes from getting clogged up with finish? Thanks!

Someone is selling a very nice pine lap steel online. I like it but it is probably too soft of a wood. It is unfinished but that may be good because I was wondering if there was someway I could treat the wood to make it stronger/or add a solid coating on it to make it a little less fragile? I have been trying to find some sort of neck rest and string changing type device to keep my lap steel from moving all over the place when I change the strings on it. Ok, I'll go with what was said about getting a cheap china made resonator. What are good starter resonators that I can buy and play as is, with tuners that stay in tune and etc.. That is probably a better idea than possibly destroying a guitar. It isn't going to be fantasy but it needs to be in tune...
