Best/Worst Review

Mike Sorry it took so long to respond, but I just got a chance to listen to this piece. Beautiful. It is a shame some folks can't go beyond preconceived notions of how or what an instrument, and its player, should play. Do you have any other pieces where you explore the steel guitar? I'd love to hea...

I think country music producers have done just as much to get rid of the steel guitar. If you hear it on record, it is sliding from one chord to another as background sounds. There are some bands that feature the steel, but lately on record simplistic banjo playing seems to have taken over. And 80s ...

Holy Grail of Steel Guitars

Thanks Chris L. Very interesting info. A lot of money, but not in the stratosphere. Where the heck would you find a banjo player with $100K, let alone five bucks?

Are there pictures of an Emmons wraparound anywhere? I'd love to see one.

Worst Review/Best Review

I've been playing music for many, many years. I've had some great gigs, lots of good gigs and a few bad gigs. Does anyone care to share their best and worst reviews from their careers? My worst was when I was in high school, a local Shakespeare company put on Twelfth Night, updated to Colonial Ameri...

Holy Grail of Steel Guitars

Well, if I win the lottery I may buy one of those pre war Mastertones. With steel guitars, I would bet that there isn't that ONE instrument because, while Buddy Emmons is a master, the steel isn't identified with just him. In bluegrass, Earl Scruggs defined the sound with his old Gibson banjo with t...

Holy Grail of Steel Guitars

For 5 string banjo players, THE instrument to own would be a pre-war (WWII) Gibson Mastertone with an original neck. You could buy one today for between $40,000 to $180,000, if you can find one for sale. Mandolin players lust for a Gibson Lloyd Loar era (1921-1924) F-5. I've seen them at music store...

Steel for Kids

After playing 5 string banjo, mandolin, Dobro, guitar (acoustic and electric), and non-pedal steel for over 40 years, I finally bought a pedal steel a couple of months ago. It is a Stage One, and I really like it. Why a Stage One? It got great reviews from many people and Doug Earnest was very easy ...

Banjo/Steel players

Add Winnie Winston and Jerry Garcia to that list. Jerry's banjo playing was better than his steel playing. John McEuen of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is a great banjo player and also plays non-pedal steel. Since the 5-string is typically tuned to an open G, it shouldn't be too hard to pick up if you ...

Stage One

I've had my Stage One for about three months now. I really like it. With shipping costs included, a new one should be within your budget.
