Tom, as a new steel player (but an old six-string player with a good solid understanding of chords and theory) I want to thank you for this document as it answers a lot of questions I had. It presents a lot of useful information organized in a way that suits the way I learn easiest.

Re: Get a cheap ticket

Hi Malcolm, Make out a fake receipt as if it was a used instrument for about 1/4 the value to keep the tax down. I doubt any customs agent anywhere knows what a steel guitar is worth. Next time vote for a party that promises to lower taxes. Good luck. Andy Don't do this - it is illegal. If they cat...

Hi - A steel is heavy, so you will have significant shipping costs. Then you will have heavy import duties, whatever they are in Finnland. In Germany I count on 20% duties plus shipping - plus the hassles and risks of shipping a heavy piece of gear overseas. So figure the difference between US and F...

NOS RCA and Sylvania 6V6 can be had for reasonable prices, at least over here.
The "TungSols" sound good to me, too, and I use them when I don't want to use the good stuff.

I live in Germany (where Lehle is made) and none of the major sources have the 90 in stock yet. I do own the standard version, and just today I tested it with my steel. The Lehle is a fantastic pedal. I was concerned that the pivot position would be an issue but the pedal area is large enough for me...

There should be a tube chart inside the amp. If this is a real '65, according to the schematic it should take a GZ34/5AR4. A 5Y3 wouldn't last long in that amp. It IS used in the older TWEED Deluxe, but that amp has little in common with the DR.

Are you certain you need a 5Y3? Normally you would use a 5AR4 or 5U4, depending on the year of manufacture.

Hi -

It would also be worth your while to try Jupiter speakers. I put a 12" ceramic in my tweed deluxe, and liked it so much I am considering replacing the D120F in my DR with one. A band mate replaced the Jensens in his Vibrolux with Jupiter 10s and we are both happy as can be.

Lace Alumitone pickup dimensions

Hi -

Can anybody give me the dimensions, including depth, of the Lace Alumitone 10-string pickup? I'm finding nothing on the Lace site.

Thanks -

According to Graham Nash the Dead we're recording nearby and they asked Jerry to play the part. After the first take Jerry said he could do better. Nash said he could do a second take if he wanted, but they were going to use the first anyway. From memory from Nash' autobiography, so it may not be 10...

Since you are in the UK, you could try this -

I've built four or five of them, cheap, quick, works well. I put them in small boxes with a belt clip and leave one on each guitar strap for my main 6-strings.

You are just looking at parts. Consider also the tools you need - are you drilling your chassis or buying one ready made? Are you building your own cab or buying one ready made? If you are building one do you already have access to a table saw , a router, and various sanders? Is your time worth anyt...

Think very carefully before you go down this road. I built one amp just to see how it works, just one. I wasn 't going to build any more. That was 20 amps ago. If you are going to do this, then I suggest - - you read up on safety precautions. You will be working with lethal voltages. Not only must y...

Sylvania/Philips 6L6WGB can be had at a decent price. They are quite good.

SED (Winged C; the real Svetlana) stopped production of ALL receiving tubes, as far as I know.

Note that I numbered my lugs backwards ... don't get confused.

But - it calls the middle lug the input, and the right-most lug the output; that is backwards from what I usually see in guitar amps.

If it's a linear taper pot, then what Dick said is correct - the middle is the wiper (output) and you can use whichever of the others you want as input and ground. But usually lug 1 (on the right seen from the back with the lugs up) is used as input, and 3 as ground. If it is an audio (or logarithmi...

I have a Lex, a Flint, and a Deco. I use the Deco for slap back and chorus. The Flint does a fantastic job on the Fender "Harmonic Vibrato," which is why I bought it. The Lex with an EH B9 is frighteningly good. Strymon stuff is top-notch. It is well-built, sounds good, built like a tank, ...

Two KT66 require 4.4A heater current (including 6 preamp tubes), compared to 3.6A for 6L6gc. If the Hammond 290DX specs are accurate, the PT only provides 4A heater current. It is likely the PT will run very hot and possibly self destruct - I wouldn't try it.
