Since all you are actually going to use is the preamp, why not just get a preamp? I don't play steel much any more, so.... but the things I mention all work with steel, too. I have an Atomic Ampli-FireBox. It will do a workman's job on a Deluxe, a Twin, a Marshall Plexi , a JCM800, a "Rumble&qu...

I watched “The Great Hack” on Netflix recently, which further justified the decision to delete my FB account 3 years ago. It wasn’t just the data mining, which would have been enough. All social media needs a reset. The only way that will happen is if there is a mass exodus of everyone kickin...

When I was (trying to) play keyboards and pedal steel, I made a simple folding stand that placed the keyboard about 10" above the guitar. The top of the stand pivoted so the keyboard could be angled slightly towards me, and it worked out great! The keyboard was a fairly light 49-key Casio, and...

FWIW - MT Power Drum Kit is a free VSTi, works well and sounds good. You can MIDI-record the patterns from a standalone drum machine then use the VSTi. Tempo matching and sliding are a problem left to the recordist :)

It is good. It's very fiddly once you open the USB connected GUI to it. There's a gain staging GUI-part you have to get right to get the patches to balance. Not sure it's all that for steel, but for six string it does what ( at least I) would expect. For me at least, the amp itself handles steel and...

Y'know - I bought a cheap Samson S-Direct Plus two-channel DI for live use with a keyboard instrument years ago, and I just track with that. I'll use an amp VST or a convolution-playback VST and a convolution signature of my Blues Deluxe & 1936 cab now and again, but increasingly, I just use the...

One option for keeping XP is to run a virtual machine of it. Most of the virtual machine software packages have a mechanism for converting a hard drive over.

Whether or not you can connect PCI or USB ( or, I suppose Firewire ) devices to the virtual machine depends.

If you're comparing apples to apples, say, a Twin against a Steelaire, it's going to be pretty subtle. The Steelaire wins on several points for me, not the leats of which is losing the 300Hz notch on a Twin. If you're comparing a Steelaire against a 40W Blues Deluxe, it'll be much less subtle. The g...

By any chance is Quilter planing a smaller version of the steelair, say a 112 mabe 80 or 100 watt for smaller gigs? I wouldn't if I were them. Turning the master volume down doesn't change the sound that much - obviously, all speakers sound different at lower volume but the Steelaire is an extremel...

"When to move the bar" is an artistic choice. Take the intro to Hank Junior's "Whisky Bent". On my guitar, the initial 5-note run up can be played pretty much without moving the bar, but the phrasing isn't the same as when you move the bar.

You can break down a combo amp into three pieces that happen to be in the same package: - Preamp - Power amp - Speakers The preamp offers buffering ( more current ), tone shaping and level controls. Power amp just adds volts and current. Speaker moves air. Voltage is force, current is how-many-elect...

You may not be able to use more than one USB thing with "ASIO drivers" at a time. You will likely want to use ASIO drivers for low-latency monitoring. That puts things in favor of a multi-input Scarlett-style interface if that's at issue. Also - what Jack said - avoid USB bus-powered inter...

I agree with Malcolm. The power section has lots of RMS watts but the amp's overall gain is very low making it hard to achieve high levels of dynamics or volume. I also discussed this with Pat Quilter who agreed that perhaps the amp should have been designed with more gain. Some of the earlier Quil...
