Hey Jack... I just want to thank you for this thread and your tuning presets. For the past 6 months (or more) I've been hell bent on getting a Peterson but didn't want the Stomp and the StroboPlus is impossible to find around here. The Clip HD was obvious but it didn't come with the E9 sweeter and I...

The Peavey's with the Paramid, e.g. NV400, NV112, etc only cut or boost a specific frequency , not all the mids. Its not like a mid control in some other amps that may control a band of "mid" frequencies. The "Q" is not tight enough on these amps to effect ONLY the given frequen...

Guys there is hope. I am young (30s) and picked it up this year. God willing and creek don't rise got me into it when I couldn't figure out how to play those parts on guitar. Thank you! Here in Winnipeg MB I am meeting new young steel players every month. I got into steel 10 - 12 years ago because ...

Don't be fooled! I definitely wouldn't interpret a Peavey or any other guitar amp as producing flat response when the pots are all in the middle position. Peavey SOLO series from the 80's. That includes the Renown, Bandit 65, Special 130, Nashville 400, Session 400 and a few others. If you scope th...

What a great piece of music... I'm glad I saw this post, albeit a couple months late. A group I was with got to do several opening shows for Southern Pacific in the late 80's across western Canada. I'll offer a few thoughts rather than licks. This is to help you think of it as more than just a 7th  * No pedals... D# is your major 7th. Very handy with melodic lines * No pedals... D is your dominant 7th. There is no shortage of licks in this position. * A/B pedals.... D# become your flat 5...

IIRC... the earlier models had a really weak LKL lever which led to a "vice grip" fix many used. This was resolved in the later models. The later models also came with two adjusting legs, rather than just one. FWIW, I've had my Starter for about 10 years and it is still going strong. I put...

I agree with Bob completely, I really doubt it's the guitar itself. I think you need to find out if the problem follows you, or if the problem follows the steel. The best way to do that is to get together with another steel player where the two of you can sit at each others steels and see what is ha...

There are two generations of starters... the original ones had 1 adjustable leg and the LKL lever problem people speak of. Re: So I am Lead to Believe...

There are other uses for these changes, but with the factory setup, you can think of the right knee as your 7th chords. In an open position, the 2nd string lower makes a seventh chord. With A&B pedals down, the G on strings 1&7 makes a seventh chord. What a great conceptual approach to the ...

I don't have either of the models listed so I cannot comment directly... but I it is a comment on lower cost (starter) type steels. I never noticed it at first, but yes - I think Ian is correct. My bell cranks are nearly vertical, yours are not. As Ian says, you should be able to correct that by tightening the tuning nuts and resetting the stop screw. I can't imagine that someone actually put longer rods into a Starter, but I gu...

Your carriage looks a little different from my starter in that area. Mine is a later model (2010 or so), maybe yours was an earlier model? I'm just thinking out loud with that. Re: Fix for sharpened third issue

It's a well known problem that, within Equal Temperament, the third tends to sit a little sharper than is natural for the ear, otherwise known as the Pythagorean comma. I have recently started using the G# lever to flatten the 3rd a few cents on big open chords (e.g. an open E chord, no bar). Does ...

Overuse of Vibrato.

When I'm having a bad day I notice my left hand tries to over compensate with mindless vibrato, likely in an attempt to make it sound more interesting. Steel is not my primary instrument... I find I need to keep that left hand in check at all times!
