I saw Dan live once with Norton, but I don't know whether Dan ever did any recording with him.

I happened to stumble across this old thread. I took some lessons from Dan back in the 1970s. At the time he was living in Agua Caliente or one of those small towns outside Sonoma CA. He was playing for Norton Buffalo at the time. Dan was a great player then, and simply fabulous now. I really do not...

Al Petty Guitar

I have one of Al Petty's guitars. I communicated with Al over a year or two, and even visited him in Overton during the 80s. I was interested in the use of the steel guitar as a midi controller (basically that is all the Steel Guitorchestra is), and no one knew more about it at the time than Al. Al ...

Thanks b0b. Unfortunately tonight I have a date with the Stanley Cup playoffs. What I have never understood is how the dates are determined. Is it just every other Wednesday, alternating between acoustic and electric? The fact that this is an uncommon 5th Wednesday of the month suggests that it is n...

Why not? I keep threatening to come anyway. I always seem to remember about 7 pm Wednesday evenings, and then I am not even sure that it is the right Wednesday.

Someone posted a link to a Youtube live version of An Empty Glass above. Here is a link to a more polished version on the Live at Billy Bob's album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qt76ZkLHtfI Is this also Steve Palousek? I always liked Gary Stewart, in part because of the great steel playing on all ...

John: Are you talking about info on Fred Jones? Fred (as he was known then) did play with Norton Buffalo for a while. Fred dropped the "Fred" long ago and went back to his real name, Daniel. I lost track of him for many years, but found him again a few years ago. He is now a Phd teaching m...

Steel Players and the Cajun Accordion

There seems to be an affinity between steel players and the cajun accordion (actually I do not know why it doesn't run to the accordion generally since the steel seems to have replaced the accordion (used similarly with remarkably similar licks)in western swing). A number of years ago, my wife and I...

Northern CA - Llyod Maines to Appear with Terri Hendrix

Lloyd Maines is a legendary steel guitar player who has been around for many years. He created some timeless instructional material that may still be available. However, in all the time I have been following the instrument, I have never had the opportunity to see Lloyd play. I do not believe he play...

Larry: Someday I will go through this entire post, but, in case you close it off some day, I thought I would add my nostalgic recollections of my first "professional" steel, a ZB S-11 on a double body. Unfortunately I have none of the details you are looking for. I bought it through John C...
