Grip
I'm starting to get a bit of a handle on playing this wonderful instrument. Next thing I could really use help on is my grip. I'm using a Dunlop 919 (I think). I'm NOT buying another bar right now, so I need a little help. I have pretty good control over the bar while fretting notes. Two issues I ha...

A minor breakthrough
I'm a total noob when it comes to lap steel. (I've played guitar for 25+ years but this thing is all new to me!) I got one for Xmas and have dabbled off and on with it since then. I was originally shown some things in E7 tuning, and, although I do plan to dabble in that a bit more (for blues and roc...

Ok, so I finally had some time to sit with that C6 chart in front of me and a guitar in my lap. Really cool stuff there! For one, there is a tune that I've been playing along with that has an Em7b5 chord that I've just been playing the high E string at the 12th. I've found, (if I'm reading that char...

Wow, lots of great info here! Thanks guys! That chart is driving me nuts! At one point I feel like I totally get it and moments later I'm looking at it like...what?? Haha. There's just a ton of info on there and I plan to work through it. Any tips on tackling it would be great As for the lesson from...

Learning scales
My adventure continues. I'm starting to see chords pretty well. I have been playing along to some songs and getting some nice sounds overall. My next task will be learning scales. I'm in C6 tuning. I'm planning to map out a C major scale all over the neck. I figure that this will accomplish learning...

Hand cramping up
So I've been learning how to play lap steel for a few weeks. I'm making good progress but I'm cramping up in my left hand/arm. Are there stretches that you do before playing? Am I gripping the bar wrong??? (You wouldn't know without seeing my grip...). I guess I'm asking if this is common and what c...

I can't stress enough how helpful this forum has been! I finally had an hour to sit and play this tuning and I'm grabbing chords and playing along to chord charts. Good stuff! This instrument has been, and continues to be a challenge for me and I love it! As a guitarist of 25+ years it's good to be ...

Ok, trying C6
I just put on the strings that Mr. Neer recommended and tuned to C6. I'm ready to do this! I'm going to use http://www.looknohands.com/chordhouse/guitar/index_rb.html as a guide to try to figure out where I am. If anyone wants to post some of the more often used chord shapes on here I would love to ...

I'm going to try this tuning tonight when I get home from work. I'm also going to look for a teacher in my area. I'd really like to have someone lay it all out for me. I know I can figure it out eventually but to see it from the perspective that someone who's played it for years can bring could be v...

Yeah, typo on that tuning. High E, not D. I see a few minor chords in there. I will check out C6. I did order strings specifically for C6 tuning and it seems that the gauges are very different than what I have on there at the moment. Am I mistaken on this? Can I get a c6 tuning from what I've got on...

New to steel. Who to listen to?
As the subject suggests, I'm new to lap steel. I'm looking to hear some good playing but I don't know of any good players. I just like the sound of the instrument so I figured I'd get one and see where I could take it. I'm more into rock and blues so who should I check out? I really DON'T like count...

Minor chords
I'm playing in E7 tuning (low to high - B-D-E-G#-B-D).
I am super new to lap steel and I'm having a hard time finding minor chords that really stand out as much as major chords and "seeing" where the roots are. Any help on this?
Thanks!

I've been trying to learn or play along to some chord charts. This way I actually feel like I'm making music and not just practicing patterns and such. I'm trying to learn chords in the same or at least close position so I don't have to slide 5+ frets to the next chord. I'm pretty sure I've got the ...

Thanks guys!! I think I was a little naive getting into this. haha. I've played guitar for 25 years and have picked up other instruments pretty quickly in that time simply by watching people. I'm fairly humbled by the level of difficulty on this instrument. I'm actually thinking that I might look fo...

Gabriel, I have a temporary solution for you: stop slanting! It's OK, you can make plenty of music without slanting, you just bring the technique in over time. I'm not sure which tuning you're using, but what's more important is getting to know what you can do without slanting the bar first. If you...

Wow. I'm struggling. I can slant when pushing the back of the bar back under my palm ok. Going out though, I'm pushing the slide right off of the strings and throwing it onto the floor. I can't get my thumb there in time and when I do I don't have my index finger in the right spot...or something. I ...

Open Tuning Help
I'm trying to learn lap steel. I am using E7 as my tuning (Low to high - B-D-E-G#-B-E)
Can anyone offer some advice on learning all of the notes on the board and some good shapes for chords?
Thanks!

New Guy Here
Hey guys! I'm new not only to this forum but to the Lap Steel Guitar! My girlfriend was kind enough to get me a beginner level lap steel for Christmas and now I'm trying to get to know the thing a bit. I'm a rock/jam/blues player for the most part. I've played guitar for around 25 years and felt lik...
