James and Larry- Thanks to you both for your responses. I currently use a chair I had in my apartment plus a meditation cushion, not the most professional but the cushion really helps. The main question/problem is the relationship of my left knee and foot. When my feet are on the pedals my left knee...

Looking for lessons/Tips for a short steel player

Hey y'all- I bought a GFI entry level model off the forum and am getting my butt kicked! I'm looking for some recommendations on lessons...I live in Vermont but am assuming I'll be using an online program since there aren't many active pedal steel players in the state (maybe I'm wrong and you know s...

Thanks to you both, these guitars look great! Might be just what I'm looking for. How cool that there are solid entry level pedal steels being produced.

Looking for decent "entry level" single pedal steel

Hey all! I've been playing non-pedal lap steel (1951 Fender D6 Pro, will likely be up for sale soon) for 10 years or so. While I've gotten decent at the D6,the thing is, the sound I've always wanted is a pedal steel. So I've finally decided to take the plunge. I'm looking for something fairly simple...

Thanks everyone for your thoughts/advice. Tom- upon second measurement my string spacing is damn close. At the current position of the pickup I measure 2.1875" Lollars' dimensions from center of each end pole on his Supro pickup is 2.175" by moving the position of the new pickup very sligh...

Thanks for all the responses and recommendations. I'm looking at the Lollar Supro pickup: http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=LGP&Product_Code=Supro&Category_Code=steel-guitar-pickups The sizing seems almost perfect for my S6 and the tone sounds great. An...

Thanks for your feedback. I am fairly new to the world of guitar customization and have a question about swapping pickups in a 6-string lap steel: Can you just swap 6-string guitar pickups for 6-string lap steel pickups? I'm wondering mostly because of a difference in string spacing. The string spac...

Lap Steel Pickup recommendations?

Hey all- First post in a long while! I'm heading out on a tour with a Saharan guitarist named Bombino (look him up, he's pretty neat!) and I'll be playing lap steel on this tour. Currently I own a Fender 51' D6 Pro which has easily the most amazing sounding pickups of any instrument I've ever owned....

Any other good spots to try out dobros? Any recommendations on smaller local builders that might have dobros for under $1000?

Thanks

@John- Thanks, we'll try to stop by, although you never know whats going to happen on the road, hopefully our schedule allows for some time to stop at shops such as yours. @Brad- Thanks for the hints, I was planning on going to Gruhn's (I think I can get upstairs to the showcase room) and will try t...

"Must-Visit" spots in Nashville & Austin for s

Hey All- I'm about to embark on a national tour in April/ May with a guitarist named Bombino, from the Sahara Desert. He is a phenomenal guitarist, although not a steel guitarist, and is worth checking out. He'll be recording in Nashville in June with some BIG names (can't divulge yet). On our tour ...

I suppose my angle on all of this is that i've been considering buying some type of instructional supplement, either a DVD or book, and was considering purchasing one for the Dobro rather than the 6-string lap steel since there seems to be more solid instructional materials for the dobro. Thoughts?

6 String Lap Steel vs. Dobro technique

Hey all- I've been playing lap steel for several years without following any real technique. I'm wondering what, if any, differences there are between 6-string lap steel and dobro technique. It seems to me that I could simply apply traditional dobro technique to 6-string lap steel. At the moment I u...

Mike- I did restring it using a chart I found online, but is there a trusted one you can recommend?

Anyone else out there have any recommendations about the pricing of this steel? I greatly appreciate any input.

50/51 Dual 6 Pro- Pricing opinion and other options...

Hey there- I'm new to the Forum and have been playing lap steel for a couple of years. Currently I own a mid-60's 'entry level' 6-string steel, not even sure of the brand as there is no obvious indicator on it. I am considering buying a Fender Dual 6 Pro from a friend. I included a couple of pics so...
