A lot of his band friends are gone now.....he kept his tools and spare parts in zip pouches and his picks and bars in a plastic container. I guess as Robert Stack said many times, "Perhaps it will remain an unsolved mystery."

Ah might be! I never thought of that....I was little when I'd watch him play, so I don't remember much. He didn't have that there everytime he played though.......He did have big fingers, so I think it's possible.

Is this something for strings?

I've seen this in a few videos that I have of Dad. It looks round and orange on top. Does anyone have any idea what it is and what it's used for? Maybe it's something for strings? I'm just curious LOL http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix1504/11450_Screenshot_18_1.jpg http://bb.steelguitarforum.com...

The way that tab is written, Jason, you do move the bar up to the fifth fret (across all strings at the 5th fret) and play the strings one at a time: first string 4, then string 3, string 2, and string 1 Got'cha....what does the linkage on strings 2 and 4 mean, at the 5th fret (the line drawn down ...

Need help with learning to read tabs

I've been trying to teach myself how to read tabs for a while, but still can't grasp it. I understand that the strings are numbered to the left, and I believe the numbers in between are the frets that each string is played.....but that's pretty much all I understand about them. Can anyone give me so...

Don't sell yourself short, Jason......playing by ear is a skill some people envy. Learning music theory not only would help, but because of your available skill, you would understand it easier and more fully than someone who was just starting from scratch in learning an instument. Is Cajon only pla...

Learning frets for Cajun Music

Can anyone give me some tips on learning fret positions? I know for Cajun music, my positions mostly go from 2-4, 5-7 and sometimes 9. When I started out about a year ago, the guy that got me started had me mark the frets, so I'd like to start getting off that crutch. I know just like everything els...

Thanks for the tip! I was hoping some of the ones I know would chime in. I guess I'll make another thread and see how it goes!

Thank you! Do these tips apply for only E9th?

Thank y'all for the input! Right now, I only play a G tuning on my back neck, I know nothing on the E9th. Do these tips still apply since it's not the same tuning?

Re: G7 Tuning

Ok. Which neck do you have setup for you open G7 tuning? I think you are saying you are experimenting with your E9 tuning and you say it's setup for Emmons? Correct? I know that most Cajun players are different in how they setup the turnings. You should be able to play this with Emmons setup. The on...

Thanks so very much! I don't mess with E9th very much, since my main focus is Cajun music. Most of what I've learned to play is all with the G7th tuning, and doesn't require much pedal work...but lately I've been experimenting with the pedals to add a little flavor! It's cool because I have little k...

Need help figuring out lick

I'm having a bit of trouble figuring out how to play the lick on Brooks & Dunn's "Ain't Nothing 'Bout You" I can only play by ear, so if I can figure out what key it's in, I may be able to figure it out. It sounds very simple. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mx7m10x1geo My setup is Emm...

Thanks for the input, guys! Maybe I can find a video showing these at work to better understand them, since diagrams aren't my thing.... I think I have a basic understanding though. Perhaps they work like when you tune any stringed instrument (that I know of). Instead of tightening the string with t...

How do PSGs work?

Just curious...I've heard of push-pull and all pull guitars, but never really fully understood what that means. Mine is a Sho~Bud Super Pro, I believe it's all pull, but not sure. I assume that a mechanism that pulls the strings causes the change in tuning, but if that's the case, how does a push ty...

Thanks for the information! Do you know of any site that would have a complete list of his recordings? I'd like one to see which ones I have and may be missing. I found a picture of him with a Rickenbacker steel. Perhaps this is the one you made reference to? http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/userpix14...

Jason, the "big bar" craze didn't really come about until the late '50s. Before that, most bars that were used were short and only 1/2" or 9/16" in diameter. In fact, many of the earliest bars were just a flat piece of steel with a rounded edge, like this one... http://bb.steelg...
